EQUIPMENT

I like to keep it to no more than two camera bodies and three, maybe four lenses. Sure, I’d like to bring everything, but too much gear becomes heavy, unmanageable and you find yourself fiddling with equipment rather than creating photographs. Unless I’m off to shoot something that requires special glass – extra long, extra wide or whatever, I find that I do quite well with with a 16-35, 25-105 and a 70-200. Also, bring your camera’s manuals.

You’ll want a tripod and some kind of shutter release mechanism; remote, electric cable or radio. I carry one circular polarizer, but a gradient neutral density filter can be of great use. Storage is cheap these days. An enthusiastic photographer can shoot 6-8 gigabytes in a day. So, for a weeks outing, two 32gb cards should do just fine. Please have at least one extra battery and check that your recharging equipment is working properly before leaving home. I recently purchased a portable battery charger and have used it on my phone and tablet. Could be worth looking into for camera batteries.

WHAT TO BRING

This, too, varies upon the location of your workshop and the time of year. Summer days are generally warm, and can get hot, but evenings cool quickly. Dressing in layers is always a good idea, as even on the warmest of days it can all change quickly. Several shirts, shorts, long pants, hiking boots, tennis shoes, fleece jacket, heavy jacket, warm gloves, hat, sunglasses, lip gloss, sun screen. A flash light or headlamp will always come in handy. Monsoons start in late July, early August and regular afternoon thunderstorms warrant some kind of rain gear.

Last year, I stood at the back of my truck pondering whether or not to pack a lightweight down jacket on the Weminuche trip. I’d never needed one before in the third week of July. And, after all, I had a fleece vest and a heavier fleece jacket. So, I left the down coat in the truck. That night and each thereafter, I froze.
